Ho-Am Art Museum: A Treasure Trove of Korean Art and Culture

If you are looking for a place to appreciate the beauty and diversity of Korean art and culture, you should visit Ho-Am Art Museum in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do. This museum was founded in 1982 by Lee Byung-chul, the founder of Samsung Group, who named it after his pen name Ho-Am (meaning "lake and rock").

Collections and Exhibitions

The museum houses over 15,000 works of art that span from the prehistoric era to the modern times, covering various genres such as paintings, ceramics, metalwork, calligraphy, Buddhist art and folk art. The museum consists of four exhibition halls:

  • Hee Won (희원): traditional Korean paintings
  • Il Won (일원): ceramics and metalwork
  • Cheon Won (천원): calligraphy and Buddhist art
  • Bo Won (보원): folk art and crafts

One of the highlights of Ho-Am Art Museum is its collection of celadon pottery from the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). The museum has over 500 pieces of celadon pottery, including some rare examples with intricate inlaid designs or animal-shaped lids. Another highlight is its collection of paintings from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The museum has over 300 paintings from Joseon Dynasty, including some famous works by renowned artists such as Jeong Seon, Kim Hong-do, and Shin Yun-bok.

Besides these permanent exhibitions, Ho-Am Art Museum also hosts special exhibitions throughout the year that showcase different aspects of Korean art and culture. For example, until December 31st 2021, you can visit "The Splendor of Metalwork: From Prehistory to Modern Times" exhibition at Cheon Won Hall.

Ho-Am Art Museum is located inside Everland Amusement Park, one of Korea's largest theme parks. You can access the museum by taking a shuttle bus from Everland's main gate. The museum is surrounded by a beautiful garden that covers an area of 330,000 square meters. The garden has various plants, flowers, trees, ponds, bridges, pavilions, sculptures, etc. that create a harmonious landscape. You can stroll around the garden or take a guided tour to appreciate its beauty.

Admission and Hours

Ho-Am Art Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. The admission fee is 4,000 won for adults, 3,000 won for students and seniors, and free for children under six years old. You can also get discounts if you have an Everland ticket or membership card.
